Sharks are among the most misunderstood creatures on the planet, which makes their disappearance at a rate of over 100 million per year all the more critical. At this rate, scientists estimate that in just over a decade, there will be no sharks left.
In addition to the senseless loss of intelligent and elegant animals, it is now widely acknowledged that extinction of the shark will result in a massive disruption of the delicate ecosystem that is responsible for generating 70% of the oxygen on the planet.
In our keen interest to help minimize the damage humans are causing our oceans, we work to share with the general public and scientific communities information gathered through our extensive oceanic expeditions and travel.
With over 70% of the earth covered by oceans, our planet is water-centric. Despite worldwide efforts, much more needs to be done to preserve and protect this vital resource – one that feeds us, provides our oxygen, absorbs our CO2 and, quite literally, binds us together as a species.
Many initiatives have been put in place using the word “green” and we at UEV support these efforts in every way possible. However, when we look at our planet as a whole, it is blue.
Planet Blue is our latest initiative to bring attention to actions that damage delicate underwater ecosystems. Through Planet Blue, we are working to educate and inform school children so they have the emotional and intellectual tools to protect and preserve our oceans and the creatures in them.
