Return To the Monitor (2008)

“Return to the Monitor” is a special, one-of-a-kind program that takes you on survey expeditions to the United States’ most famous Civil War ironclad ~ the USS Monitor.   The documentary follows a dozen of the world’s top scuba divers and historians as they plunge 235 feet below the Atlantic’s surface to examine and document first-hand the decay and deterioration of our nation’s most pivotal warship. Sunk in 1862 in a storm off Hatteras, North Carolina, the Monitor now rests in the first national marine sanctuary established by the U.S.

In this program, viewers experience what it’s like to successfully plan and dive an expedition of significant technical and scientific magnitude, on the wreck of a national shrine which has no peer in terms of historical import.  Along the way, the expedition leaders, historians, archeologists, scientists and divers explore technical, historical and educational facts about the dives, the site, the rapid deterioration of this national treasure, as well as the delicate balance of marine ecosystems.

“Return to the Monitor” presents four distinct themes: history and cultural significance of the Monitor, not only to naval warfare but ultimately to the outcome of the Civil War; results of scientific underwater surveys completed during the dives, including the deterioration of the wreck; the critical ecological and cultural importance of our nation’s national marine sanctuaries; and the process of and hazards associated with deep technical diving. The viewer is also privy to on-the-spot dive briefings about equipment, planning, and other activities necessary for successful expeditionary diving exploring the last great frontiers left on the planet.
